Disney vs Netflix | Everything You Need To Know About Disney's Upcoming Streaming Service

Walt Disney's CEO Bob Iger is squaring up to Netflix...

You've probably noticed that the way we consume content is changing pretty quickly.

20 years ago, Blockbuster provided a new, efficient film distribution service in the form of VHS rentals and it was this chain of stores that saw in the age of the DVD. The high definition Blu-Ray has since usurped the now out-dated disc and - mostly thanks to Netflix - things have started to go digital. Less and less people are watching TV channels, subscribing to cable TV and visiting the cinema; at the same time, YouTube and streaming services are creating a direct-to-the-consumer distribution model that seems to mark the final evolution from ape (VHS) to homo sapien (streaming).

Disney, arguably the most powerful media company in the world, is currently adding the final touches to its rival to Netflix with an as-of-yet untitled streaming service set to debut in 2019. The company's CEO Bob Iger spoke to The Hollywood Reporter today in regards to the service:

"I'm impressed with what has been accomplished at Netflix and Amazon. But none of them is either Disney or Marvel. Or Pixar. Or Star Wars or National Geographic or FX or Searchlight or' Avatar' — I could go on. So we enter the business that they're in, in many respects, with an advantage from a content perspective that will enable us to focus on quality rather than just volume.

[Netflix are] a volume play with a lot of quality within their volume. And we're going to be a quality play with enough volume and enough scale to provide the consumer with a good price-to-value relationship."

In case the entire Walt Disney Pictures catalogue wasn't enough to make you sign up for a free trial - a catalogue that includes Pixar, Disney Animation, ESPN, ABC, Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm and the entirety of 20th Century Fox - Iger has announced that new, exclusive film and television content is already in production.

Here are all the projects in development that we know about so far...

'Scarlet Witch' Miniseries (Marvel Studios)

Produced by Marvel Studios, Elizabeth Olsen is set to reprise her role as Wanda Maximoff in a limited series exploring the character of the Scarlet Witch. It's unknown whether any fellow Avengers will star and it remains a mystery whether the series will take place before or after the events of Avengers: Infinity War in which she was killed by Thanos. Marvel Studios announced that more high budget miniseries will be revealed in the upcoming months starring "second-tier" established characters (i.e, characters that haven't yet headlined a solo film) as well as brand new heroes.

'Loki' Miniseries (Marvel Studios)

One such second-tier character is Loki, Thor's adopted brother and anti-hero extraordinaire. It's assumed that, also due to his more brutal murder in Infinity War, the series will take place before the events of Avengers 3. Tom Hiddleston is set to reprise the role, but I'm personally rooting for a Loki-rebirth that could tie in excellently to a possible 'Young Avengers' series...

'Lady and the Tramp' Live Action Re-make (Walt Disney Pictures)

Disney is hoping you'll be down for a second course of CGI creatures after The Lion King sees a release in cinemas. That's right, in the tradition of Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella and Alice in Wonderland, Lady and the Tramp is set for a live-action comeback in a new film set to be exclusively available on the Disney streaming service. Now, if you don't mind I'm off to petition for 101 Dalmations and Aristocats to be next in line...

Untitled 'Star Wars' Series (Lucasfilm)

Rumoured to have a budget of over $100 million, Disney's 10 episode Star Wars series is aiming to fill the gap left by Game of Thrones as it ends next year. The series will be written by Jon Favreau who directed 2016's The Jungle Book, 2008's Iron Man and stars as Tony Stark's assistant Happy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

According to reports, Disney will be unable to provide any pre-2019 Star Wars content on their new streaming service as Turner Broadcasting currently hold the rights. The deal between Turner and Disney was signed in 2016 and will last for 8 years, meaning it will be 2024 by the time the original trilogy will be available on Disney's service. Lucasfilm are hoping their new content will be enough to get Star Wars fans to sign up.

Despite the formation of Disney's own streaming service, it seems that Marvel's Netflix programmes will be staying put. In an interview with Deadline in January, Ted Sarandos (Netflix's Chief Content Officer) stated "Our Marvel series that Disney produces for us – we own those shows. They run until we cancel them."

Basically, even though Disney owns the intellectual property that these shows are based on, Jessica Jones and co. should remain on Netflix (and continue to be made by Netflix) for the foreseeable future. This also adds further evidence to the idea that The Defenders will never actually join the Marvel movies as previously thought...sorry Daredevil...

It's not all fun and games, though. In an effort to convince you to sign up to their service, Disney is planning to pull their content from Netflix in 2019 à la Jay-Z and Beyoncé moving their content from Spotify to Tidal. We've yet to see whether the absence of Disney content will cause a drop in Netflix's revenue, but we do know that the company is already planning counter-programming in an effort to make you stay. Just this week, Netflix announced a high budget, live action adaptation of The Last Airbender - don't think for a second that that announcement wasn't in response to Disney's aggressive business plan.

What do you think about the new Disney shows and film in development? What other Disney properties would you like to see get their own miniseries? Let me know in the comments below and stick to JG Review for some exciting upcoming content...
