London Film Festival 2018: 'The Guilty' Film Review

My second London Film Festival screening was pretty fantastic...

The Guilty is an elegant, beautiful and gripping crime thriller. From the moment the film begins you're drawn into the plot like water down a plughole - there's an inescapable magnetic force at play which is only exaggerated by the story's single location. Don't let this put you off though; in well crafted films like this it's what you can't see that frightens you most. Also like that water down a plughole you'll feel unstable and disorientated by the time the film ends, a bewilderment not only created through Jakob Cedergren's nuanced lead performance but by the script's audacity to relentlessly surprise.

This is a perfect example of a 'high-concept' film - its premise can be quickly and easily pitched. Asger (Cedergren), a troubled policeman-turned-call handler, tries to help a woman who phones to say she's been abducted at knife-point. It's certainly an inviting pitch, even if it's reminiscent of Halle Berry's The Call. What makes this different to The Call, though, is it's aforementioned singular location.

The film camera never ventures outside the confines of the call-handlers' office, meaning we have to pay as much attention to the incoming call as the policeman tasked with answering it. That's not the only thing that requires your attention, though. The audience's visual access to the maps and data on Asger's computer screen reveals just enough for audiences to try and piece together the case unfolding - we get to play detective too.

Much of the film's magic lies within the case's twists and turns, but the troubled protagonist's character arc throughout the film further separates The Guilty from those guilty-pleasure thrillers you might stream during a sleepover. The film isn't just grounded by the gripping crime case or the sublime visuals - which were doubly impressive considering it's entirely set in an office - but by the relevant philosophical questions it leaves the audience with to ponder.

I can't go any further because I don't trust myself not to accidentally reveal something, but if you enjoy a good crime story or a good old thriller then The Guilty could be your new favourite. Director Gustav Möller elevates the genre and delivers a pensive, thought-provoking package wrapped in intrigue, tension and (surprisingly) a few big laughs.

The Guilty is set for release in UK cinemas on the 26th October, 2018. For international release information, click here.
