The Top 4 Animated Films You Need To See in 2017 | Pixar, Disney and More!

Ka-chow!

Here it is! My first run down of the films you need to see in 2017! As I explained in yesterday's reveal (click here if you haven't read it yet), 2017 sees so many exciting films headed to our silver screens that I simply cannot fit them all into my normal Top Ten format. For that reason, the list has been split into three, with the first installment being the Top 4 Animated Films that you need to see this year! Read on to find out what made the cut...

4. Cars 3

The (mostly un-asked for) third installment in Disney Pixar's Cars series offers us a slightly confusing advertising campaign; though Cars 2 felt like the Pixar equivalent of an Adam West Batman goof-fest, Cars 3 appears to go full The Dark Knight. Our first introduction to the film showed us a rather shocking crash sequence in which McQueen seems to...die? Can cars do that? We don't know, but either way Cars 3 promises to return to its roots with its original western-esque vibe returning along with the original's core racing focus. While this dramatic tonal shift doesn't equal a good film, if there's one thing we should all know, it is to never under-estimate Pixar...

Cars 3 comes out in the USA on June 16th 2017, and in the UK on July 14th 2017.

3. Despicable Me 3

Cars isn't the only franchise that will see it's main trilogy concluded in 2017, as this year marks the time to say good-bye to Gru and his girls. While for many the second installment in the Despicable Me franchise was underwhelming, this time round at least offers what DM2 didn't: an exciting villain. As an indulgence to the current 80's nostalgia craze Gru will face off against Balthazar Bratt, a fearsome foe seeking revenge for his time spent as a disregarded child actor. With the last two Minion focused films (DM2 and Minions) making over $1 billion worldwide, Gru seems to be unstoppable. With surprisingly good trailers Despicable Me 3 seems poised to take the world by storm once again...

Despicable Me 3 comes out in the USA and the UK on June 30th 2017.

2. Coco

Coco is Pixar's latest animated original story, and their first musical, which revolves around the character of Miguel. Set on the Mexican holiday 'the Day of the Dead', the music-loving Miguel opens up a portal to the land of souls after strumming the guitar of his musical hero Ernesto de la Cruz. With vibrant sugar skulls and Mexican iconography, Coco seems ready to introduce the globe to this landmark celebration of Mexican culture in a breathtaking visual explosion of joyous colour and fun. Though Hollywood has a rough history when it comes to respecting foreign cultures, Moana may reassure many that the festival will be treated with the reverence it deserves; both Pixar Animation Studios and Disney Animation Studios are owned by Disney, and so it can be expected that the effort put into portraying the Polynesian culture in Disney Animation's Moana will be replicated with Mexican culture's portrayal in Pixar's Coco. It's going to be a good one...

Coco comes out in the USA on November 22nd 2017, and in the UK on December 8th 2017.

1. The Lego Batman Movie

The most exciting animated film to come out in 2017, at least in my opinion, is the pseudo-sequel to 2014's magnificent The Lego Movie. The Lego Batman Movie revolves around everyone's favourite caped crusader as he stumbles through the crowded Lego universe created by Warner Bros. Animation Studios. It's advertisement campaign has been non-stop and literally explosive so far, and with characters including but not limited to Alfred, the Joker, Bane, Robin, Officer Gordon, Superman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Cyborg, Harley Quinn, Two Face and Batgirl showing up, The Lego Batman Movie seems destined to be the funniest and most action-packed super hero flick of all time. Need more convincing? MARIAH CAREY IS VOICING THE MAYOR OF GOTHAM. You're welcome.

The Lego Batman Movie comes out in the USA and in the UK on February 10th 2017.

So there you have it! That was my personal pick of the Top 4 animated films you need to see in 2017. Did I leave any out that you are excited for? Let me know in the comments section below and be sure to stick to JG Review for the reviews of all of these films as they come out!
