Adele Offered the Role of 'Nancy' in Disney's 'Oliver!' Remake

Hello... Disney...

According to a report from The Sun, Adele Adkins (the musical icon known to the public simply as Adele) has been approached by Walt Disney Pictures to play the role of Nancy in their upcoming remake of the hit musical Oliver!

The news comes during a tidal wave of Disney fairy-tale and musical remakes. Last year's live-action Beauty and the Beast was a stellar success at the box office and their upcoming Alladin, Mulan and Mary Poppins Returns hope to claim the same success.

The news that Disney are planning to remake the London-set Oliver! though, is fresh, and has surfaced during a period in which Britain has been once again thrust into the national spotlight as a result of today's Royal Wedding ceremony.

For a long time, musical artist 50 Cent had hoped to pitch a version of Oliver! with himself cast a Fagin and a more hip-hop imagining of the soundtrack. Due to his recent law-suit and the critical failure of the Jay-Z produced, contemporary Annie re-make, it doesn't seem like this particular Disney production will follow that creative path.

With Disney set to make over $4 billion in the world wide box office by the end of 2018, it seems that the house of mouse are proving unstoppable, especially with their plans to absorb Fox Studios as well as their lucrative sub-divisions that include Marvel Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, LucasFilm, Disney Animation Studios and their upcoming streaming service.

Adele has been asked to audition for the role, something she may find controversial. While studio heads are reportedly comfortable in the knowledge she can sing, they want proof that the musical icon is talented enough to act and dance in the film. It is unknown whether this will put the singer off from accepting the role; in the build-up to 2009's Princess and the Frog it was confirmed that studio heads asked Beyonce Knowles-Carter to audition for the role of their first African American Princess, Tiana. The 'Formation' singer, though, didn't feel like she should have to, and the role went to Anika Noni Rose.

Beyonce has since been cast as Nala in the upcoming Disney re-make of The Lion King without having to audition, however, so whether Adele ends up as Nancy or not it seems like the House that Walt built have their eyes on the musical icon for an eventual star-turn within their films.
