The Blue Umbrella (Short Film) Review

Paperman is in the lead, but Pixar attempt to promote a new style of animation with The Blue Umbrella

When Disney Animation Studios released Paperman as the short movie to accompany the excellent Wreck-It Ralph, audiences immediately took to the semi-hand drawn, semi-CGI art style. However, now Pixar Animation Studios prepare to do the same, but will it be as good as the now legendary Paperman?

The animation is stunning to watch...Go and find the Red Umbrella!

Pixar are no stranger to short films. In fact, Luxo Jr was the title that introduced Hollywood to the Animation company, as well as it's desk lamp mascot. Yes, the bulbous (see what I did there? No? Ok...) lamp that constantly flattens the 'I' in PIXAR was actually introduced in a short film. Therefore, The Blue Umbrella should be a success for the company. I am happy to say that it did impress, both visually, sound-wise and most importantly, in the story.

The visuals were so strong that I honestly had to keep reminding me that the film was animated. Most of it looked SO real it was UN real!! The shine on the surface of Umbrellas and Wellington boots was amazing for animation, and it certainly puts the likes of this year's Justin and the Knights of Valour to immense shame.

The Blue Umbrella himself is likable and surprisingly full of character...

The music is lovely and soothing and could not be more perfect for the show. It created an atmosphere unique to any other that I've experienced in a cinema. Amazing stuff.

Finally, the story was of love and was beautiful to watch. It was heart-warming and sweet and I'd pay money to see this alone, without Monsters University.

This short movie is shown before all screenings of Monsters University, so make sure you check it out!
