Doctor Strange Spoiler-Free Movie Review

Cumberbatch, McAdams, Swinton, Ejiofor and Mikkleson dazzle in the latest Marvel spectacle...

It's no secret that Disney-owned Marvel Studios is the titan of the current blockbuster landscape. With multiple movies released a year each grossing near to (or sometimes over) $1 Billion worldwide, the company seems unstoppable. Despite this, year after year, a film comes along seemingly destined to topple the empire. First was 'Guardians of the Galaxy', whose unknown characters and frat-boy humour went against the Marvel Cinematic Universe's comparatively tame past entries. After that came 'Ant-Man'', whose director troubles and development issues left many sure it would  be the studio's first flop. After the gargantuan success of the previous two however, many turned their heads to Doctor Strange, sure that this would be a film too bizarre, too...strange to win the box office dollar.
We should have guessed, really, but after garnering critical acclaim and an impressive $80+million in it's opening weekend in Europe, it seems Cumberbatch and Swinton are set to firmly validate Doctor Strange's place in Marvel's expansive saga set to culminate in 2019's 'Avengers: Infinity War'.

Passengers' Legal Trouble and Trailer Review | Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Pratt

There's a reason we woke up...

Sony Pictures Entertainment is a studio that has faced many issues over the past few years. Ever since the Sony hack (which exposed hundreds of confidential emails within the production studios) both behind-the-camera talent and actors alike felt obligated to move base. Following this, of course, was the slightly embarrassing Disney-Sony deal which allowed the character of Spider-Man to finally be implemented into the rival Marvel Studios' cinematic universe - a consequence of two failed franchise attempts to bring Spidey successfully to the silver screen.

Now though, things seem to be looking up for the company. Not only is Spider-Man: Homecoming (due to be released next year) hotly anticipated, but Passengers is due for imminent lift-off. Starring Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt, arguably the two biggest film-stars of the decade, Passengers is a film we had seen very little of, and considering it comes out in mere weeks we had the right to find that concerning. Thankfully though, we seem to have nothing to fear: the superb first trailer for the movie dropped yesterday.

Deathstroke in the DCEU | Batman, Teen Titans and Suicide Squad 2 Rumours

From Deadpool to Deathstroke; meet DC's newest villain...

As you may have heard, within the last month Ben Affleck (Bruce Wayne in the DC Extended Universe) posted a cryptic video to his socks media. The video itself appeared to show a camera test taking place on the set of Justice League, with the fan favourite mercenary Deathstroke disembarking from a cinematic flight deck. What, though, does this mean? What implications will Deathstroke's addition have to the DCEU?

Suicide Squad Review

The phrase 'style over substance' comes to mind..

Suicide Squad, the third installment in the DC Extended Universe saga (that also includes Man of Steel and the infamous Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice) has been eagerly awaited by millions worldwide. Since the very first teaser for the film dropped at last year's San Diego Comic Con, DC fans have been clamoring over every still image released for the movie. Whether it was the initial media frenzy that occurred surrounding the reveal of Jared Leto's arresting Joker or the pop-punk re-imagining of the beloved Harley Quinn, everything had pointed to DC's first true cinematic success. So, did Suicide Squad live up to the hype? Absolutely not. The film, as a film, was an utter mess.

Finding Dory Review

"But...what if I forget you?..."

A massive thirteen years after the critically acclaimed Finding Nemo washed up onto the world's cinematic shore, Disney Pixar has finally provided an entire generation with what they have clamored for since the tender ages of five, six and seven. Finding Dory is - in every way - a special film. It is a U rated movie that, despite its lack of action, glitz and glam, has audience members of 18 to 24-year-olds as gripped and moved as the children (and parents of) that you would think a summertime animation such as this would aim to entrance...

Ten Things We Learnt From the Harley Quinn Suicide Squad Trailer

"Hello boys!"

Yesterday, DC Comics and Warner Bros. released a sixty second trailer/spot highlighting the character of Harley Quinn, who is set to make her highly anticipated on-screen debut in August's Suicide Squad. Portrayed by Margot Robbie, this interpretation of the Joker's protégé-turned-supervillain is set to be very different from the character's original incarnation. Introduced in Batman: The Animated Series, Harley Quinn started life as Dr. Harleen Quinzel. A psychiatrist, Dr Quinzel was assigned to the mysterious Joker (a Batman villain currently held in Arkham Asylum). In the iconic 'Mad Love' story-line engineered by Bruce Tim and Paul Deeny, the Joker's manipulation turned the easily persuadable woman into a weapon of his own design, and hence the Joker-obsessed Harley Quinn was born. In the upcoming Suicide Squad though, it is becoming clear that this young Harley is more of an independent, cunning character than we first believed rather than the ditsy murderer we have grown accustomed to. Join me as I delve into the secrets held within the new trailer and decipher what they mean for Harley, the Joker and more...

The Top Ten Marvel Heroes We Need To See On Screen!

Wait...there's a "Squirrel Girl"?

Since the year 2000, Marvel Comics has seen a broad and extensive range of it's characters reach the big and small screens with varying degrees of success. The turn of the Millennium brought us Bryan Singer's X-Men; hugely successful, Xavier and his Mutants brought about a shift in cinema trends, introducing the world to the age of the comic book movie. Since then, Marvel Studios has created a ground-breaking cinematic universe (known in the industry as the Marvel Cinematic Universe [MCU]) and 20th Century Fox has infamously struggled multiple times to sell the Fantastic Four to less-than-impressed movie goers. While it may seem that all the characters worthy of an on screen portrayal have already received as such, any comic book reader would strongly wish to inform you of a menagerie of characters they feel deserve a place on the silver screen. This top ten rundown will explore some of my own personal favourite comic-book characters that have yet to make their on-screen debut...

Netflix's Stranger Things Review

Where on Earth did the Duffer Brothers come from?

As I was browsing the internet on my daily exploration of entertainment news and reviews, I came across a surprising collection of fan fervour. I hadn't heard of Netflix's newly released 'Stranger Things', you see, and so to find out that such a massive project had flown straight under my nose was a shock. Even more of a shock however was the acclaim. Every single trusted reviewer I follow had consistently given this series at least 8/10 (or equivalent) in scoring, so what did I do? I sat in my room - engrossed - and binge watched the entire eight hours in a day. I am not proud of this accomplishment, but believe me when I tell you this: the hype is justified.

The 2016 Academy Awards Review and Reflection

The 2016 Academy Awards have had a major impact, not just on the future of the Oscars, but on the entirety of Hollywood itself.

The 2016 Academy Awards took place last month under the orange glow of the LA sun. Hollywood icons littered the famous red carpet adorned in fashionable clothing and every 10 metres or so stood a large, golden statue of a man: Oscar. The ceremony this year was swathed in controversy – the #OscarsSoWhite hash-tag recurring on social media like an ocean current, dragging the once impenetrable ceremony into murky waters.

Batman V Superman: Why the Controversy?

In June 2013, amongst the sweltering heat of Hall H (the world famous convention hall in which thousands gather every year during San Diego Comic Con to support their favourite film franchises and characters), Batman V Superman was announced to the world...

Initially, there was intense joy and jubilation. Social media was packed with fans who were overjoyed at the idea that they would finally see Batman and Superman (arguably the most iconic superheroes of all time) appear on the big screen for the first time. It was also revealed that the Man of Steel sequel would be based on Frank Miller’s iconic ‘The Dark Knight Returns’, a ground-breaking graphic novel that changed the way mass media approached comic book material—Batman had certainly moved past his Adam West days.

The Danish Girl Review

Tom Hooper's latest masterpiece is important and timely, but is it magnificent?

A couple of weeks ago I went with a friend to see 'The Danish Girl'. While the buzz was good and the trailer enticing, the reviews from critics didn't grant the flick the same grandeur as director Tom Hooper's previous films 'Les Miserables' and 'The King's Speech'. Intrigued as to what wasn't quite seeming to fit for the majority of the critics that I follow, I delved into my local cinema - gingerbread flavoured popcorn in hand (wouldn't recommend)  - ready to be bombarded with the irresistible beauty of the ol' Hooper close-up...

Our Oscar Predictions | The 2016 Academy Awards

Check out our Oscar predictions right here...

Recently on JG Review, I led you through the films to watch in the race towards the 2016 Academy Awards. Thankfully… I wasn't too far off, and many films mentioned in my post make their appearance in the list of nominations. In this article I will play a game of will win/should win. This activity is pretty self explanatory, with the ‘should win’ a personally biased opinion and the ‘will win’ section being my prediction based on the movie’s buzz and critic’s response.
